College soccer in America has produced many top players over the years, and new potential superstars emerge every year. European clubs are increasingly scouting in America, and for the National Womens Soccer League (NWSL), college soccer is the main competition for scouting players.

Merel van Dongen
We start our article with the Dutch pride, Merel van Dongen. The player of Atletico Madrid and the Dutch national team played for the University of Alabama from 2012 to 2015. After her time in America, she immediately switched to Ajax where she signed her first professional contract and was very successful. Nice switch to Real Betis and eventually Atletico Madrid followed, where she is still active at the moment.
Mia Hamm
For many people Mia Hamm is considered the women’s soccer player of all-time. From 1989 until 1993 she played for the University of North Carolina, but even before she attended UNC she already made her debut in the National Team of America. At UNC she continued to make history, winning the NCAA National Championship 4(!) times in four years, and winning the World Cup with the National Team as a 19-year old. After a long career she finished with 275 matches for the National Team, winning the World Cup twice, the Olympics twice, and became the best women’s soccer player in the world twice!
Megan Rapinoe
Megan Rapinoe is probably the most famous women’s soccer player from America, and not just for her colorful haircuts. Megan Rapinoe played for the University of Portland from 2005 until 2008 where she won the NCAA National Championship in 2005. Currently, Megan has almost played 200 matches for the National Team of America, won the World Cup twice and the Olympics once. In 2019 she even won the title of best women’s soccer player in the world.
Kristine Lilly
Maybe not the most well known name for Dutch people, but in the women’s soccer world Kristine Lilly is a huge name. She played at the University of North Carolina alongside Mia Hamm, winning the NCAA National Championship 4 times. During, and after her time at UNC, Kristine has always been a part of the National Team of America with whom she won the World Cup twice, and the Olympics twice. Not only did she fill up her trophy cabinet, but Kristine is the player with most matches for the National Team of America with 354. In 2015, Kristine got inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame!
