The college basketball season is about to kick off, and this year promises yet another spectacular showdown. Once again, eyes are on several universities expected to bring the surprises. Over the summer, many teams welcomed new talents, while others saw star players graduate and move on (some to the NBA).
Time to take a closer look at this season’s predictions. In this blog, we highlight four “ones to watch” universities—teams you definitely want to keep an eye on this season. Curious to see which universities made the list? Read on!
University of Connecticut
Division: NCAA Division I
Conference: Big East Conference
Star to watch: Donovan Clingan, Sophomore
The University of Connecticut (UConn) is once again a top favorite this year, with all eyes firmly fixed on them. No longer seen as an underdog, the Huskies built on last year’s success by defending their title at the annual NCAA Tournament this past April, making history in the process. With a decisive 75–60 win over Purdue in the final, they became the first team since Florida in 2007 to claim the National Championship two years in a row.
UConn’s consistency is impressive, and the team seems to grow stronger each year. Their dominant playing style, combined with a deep roster and the coaching expertise of Dan Hurley, makes them a formidable opponent for any team.
All eyes will be on the University of Connecticut to see if they can achieve a historic third consecutive title and further solidify their position as one of the most successful programs in college basketball history.
University of Alabama
Division: NCAA Division I
Conference: Southeastern Conference
Star to watch: Derrion Reid, Freshman
After an impressive run to the Final Four last season, Alabama, led by head coach Nate Oats, has assembled an even stronger team this year. The Crimson Tide, as the team is known, has recruited some major new talent, further boosting their lineup. Expectations are especially high for freshman Derrion Reid; as a 5-star recruit, experts believe he could have a breakout season right from the start.
Within their own conference (SEC), Alabama appears to be the team to beat this year, boasting a powerful mix of experience, newcomers, and rising stars. The team is eager to make an impact again this season, and there’s already talk in Alabama of aiming beyond last April’s Final Four achievement.
Duke University
Divsion: NCAA Division I
Conference: Southeastern Conference
Star to watch: Cooper Flagg, Freshman
Duke University reached the Elite Eight in last season’s NCAA tournament, and this year, they’re once again fielding an impressive lineup with the potential to go far. All eyes are on Cooper Flagg, the nation’s top recruit, who already has major sponsorships and made waves in high school. He’s expected to rise rapidly and could become a global sensation. In addition to Flagg, Caleb Foster and Tyrese Proctor are back for another year, but it’s Duke’s young talent that’s set to elevate the team this season and take them to new heights.
With a blend of experience and fresh energy, Duke is ready to contend for top positions once again. Coach Jon Scheyer has a dynamic team at his disposal, and the Blue Devils could very well be the breakout surprise of the season.
Baylor University
Divsion: NCAA Division I
Conference: The Big 12 Conference
Star to watch: Adam Flagler, Redshirt Senior
Adam Flagler, the 6’3″ guard from Baylor, is regarded as one of the best college basketball players at the moment. His deadly three-point shooting, combined with a lightning-fast release, makes him particularly challenging to defend. Additionally, he excels in court awareness and shot selection, making him highly effective for Baylor as both a scorer and playmaker. It’s no surprise that Flagler leads the university in both points and assists.
Last summer, the university brought in several talented recruits, including Jeremy Roach from Duke, Norchad Omier from Miami, and Jalen Celestine from Berkeley, making their roster stronger than ever. Additionally, VJ Edgecombe, a promising five-star recruit, could break out this season and become the team’s new star. With these talents, Baylor has enough potential to have a strong year and compete for titles.
Texas A&M University
Divsion: NCAA Division I
Conference: The Big 12 Conference
Star to watch: Taylor Wade, Senior
The return of Taylor Wade for his final year represents a significant asset for the Texas university. The player brings not only impressive statistics but also leadership and experience that will be crucial in the competitive landscape at the very top.
The new additions, including Pharrel Payne and CJ Wilcher, are also significant acquisitions that can help mitigate the departure of several key fourth-year players. With their skills and experience, they are well-equipped to contribute immediately to the team. This duo, along with other newcomers, can enhance the team’s dynamics and hopefully make the transition as smooth as possible.
The upcoming season promises to be an exciting adventure for the Aggies and their fans. There are plenty of opportunities ahead, but also uncertainties due to the departure of several key players.
