From versatile athlete to full-time tennis player
Jade Groen began her sports career not only on the tennis court, but also on the athletics track. Until the age of fourteen, she successfully combined both sports. Then she chose tennis completely and has been making impressive strides ever since. With her 1.80 meters, fast footwork and powerful strokes, she quickly became one of the best youth players in the Netherlands.
Top 10 in the Netherlands and international successes
Jade was district champion several times in youth (U12, U14, U16) and was in the top 10 of the national youth rankings for many years. She also achieved international success, including a tournament victory at the TenPro U16 in Belgium. Her game is characterized by a powerful and consistent backhand, clever tactics with drop shots and slices, and excellent volleys at the net.
The move to America
After earning her VWO degree at Leonardo College, Jade decided to combine her athletic and academic ambitions in the United States. Thanks to the guidance of Slamstox, she chose Western Carolina University, where she was able to start with a full tennis scholarship. The click with coach and team was immediately good, and the level matched her ambitions perfectly.

Record holder and team captain
Jade quickly impressed: she became team captain, No. 1 in the lineup AND … she broke the record for most singles wins in the history of WCU’s women’s program. With her tenth win of the season, she passed previous record holder Jordan Strickland. A milestone she achieved with a convincing 6-1 6-0 victory against Fairfield University during a match in Florida. “I knew I could break the record, but I had to wait a while for the right match in Florida. That made it extra special,” Jade proudly told the local newspaper.
Mental strength and team spirit
Jade is praised for her mental strength and energy on the court. “I feel strongest when I’m on the court with a lot of energy. It gives me confidence and focus,” Jade said in the interview. Her coach praised her commitment and leadership on the team, calling her a crucial factor in the Catamounts’ success.
Slamstox guided Jade through every step: from university choice, scholarship negotiations to all the paperwork. Through good contact with coaches and Jade’s motivation, it turned out to be a perfect match.
Future full of potential
Jade continues to develop herself. She now plays Eredivisie for Leimonias in the Netherlands and competes in international tournaments. Her coach believes she even has potential for a professional tennis adventure.
“Both studies and tennis are going well. She is still growing with tennis, is comfortable in her skin and has become mentally stronger. The coach thinks she should play professionally – lots of potential he says.”
