An inspiring example for Dutch girls interested in American college tennis
Sophie Groen began her tennis career in the Netherlands, where she played at national level and had a ranking of 118. Her goal in the USA was not only to play tennis, but also to have a unique experience with study and social activities. Although she knew little about college tennis, Slamstox guided her through the whole process and made the contacts with different coaches.
Bemidji State: a perfect match
In the end, Sophie chose Bemidji State University, where she became a key player on the team from the very first moment. She quickly climbed up the lineup and even became one of the team captains. The coaches are extremely pleased with her commitment, both on and off the court.
Superb performances and scholarships
Sophie’s accomplishments spoke for themselves: she was awarded multiple honors, including All-NSIC Second Team in singles and First Team in doubles. In her sophomore season, she finished with a 9-5 record in singles and an impressive 9-5 in doubles with partner Shaelyn Johnson. Thanks to one of the highest scholarships on the team, Sophie was able to fulfill her dream, which would have been nearly impossible in the Netherlands.
Looking forward
After earning her bachelor’s degree, Sophie decided to pursue another master’s degree AND play an extra year for the team. Her adventure in the USA remains an inspiring example of how college tennis brings together sport, study and personal growth.
