Research your future university
While searching for the right university, preparation is key. You are about to make an important decision in your life. Choosing an American university is not easy. American universities come in many different sizes and can be very different from each other. Not every university offers the same majors and the level of education can be different as well. Some universities host over 60.000 students, whereas others only educate 500 students. Not every American university has the same (athletic) facilities. Some college teams even have their own private plane to travel from city to city, practice at Olympic level facilities and enjoy experienced staff members to develop their athletes.
As you can see, there is quite a difference between American universities. We think it’s important that our student-athletes do their research with us before making a decision. Slamstox helps you throughout this whole process.
What to look for while researching a university.
From our own experience, we know that there is a major difference between the universities, the facilities they offer and the majors they offer. To help our student-athletes doing proper research, we share a few tips:
- Academic rankings for your major
American universities can differ in level of education. That’s why it’s very important to research the academic rankings of your major.
- University size
Big or small, it all depends on your personal preference. As mentioned before, American universities can be huge or rather small. This will also have an impact on your overall experience. Make sure to pick something that fits your personal ambitions!
- Location and environment
Whether you are a true summer or winter athlete, the location of your university can determine your (athletic) results. Some student-athletes love to train in hot weather day in and day out, but that’s not for everyone. The location of your university is also important. Some universities can be found in the middle of nowhere while other universities are located in big cities. How important is the location for you?
- Sports level
The universities are divided into different divisions, but this doesn't tell the whole story. For example: a university in division 2 is not always ‘worse’ than a division 1 university. The level can vary per sport. That’s why it’s important to see which division or school fits you best before making a decision. Slamstox has extensive knowledge about the sports level and the coaches of different teams.
- Personal
Every student has his or her personal preferences and criteria while searching for a university. We are very curious about your personal preferences and ambitions. Ready to share them with us? Sign up for a meeting!
